My gripe with the mid-season finale (SPOILER)

All these zombies have been presented as slow/stupid, but somehow they surprised Carl?

Who has been presented as very capable in the zombie-world?

At this point in the show, it's just hard to accept "Veteran soldier/fighter walking in the woods, and doesn't notice 3-5 zombies lurking about."
